Waggin' Train Rescue

Trainer Referrals

We are often asked for Trainer referrals when our adoptive families would like a reputable resource whether it is for basic obedience or for behavior modifications. We have been lucky enough to have worked with several in different states. Here is a current listing of trainers that we trust and have personally worked with. These trainers are not only educated and experienced with dogs, but they use compassionate and humane training methods and have proved very successful for us and our rescue dogs they've worked with. If you contact them, please let them know we referred you.

Jill Halstead with Follow the Leader Dog Training, Central & Northwest Vermont
"Follow the Leader Dog Training offers, certified, reinforcement-based obedience training and behavior counseling in your home. We work with dogs who simply need to learn polite behaviors as well as those who exhibit fearful and aggressive behaviors. Our methods are based on what we really know about how dogs learn, not on junk theories and methods which rely on aversive methods such as scaring, striking, scruffing or pinning dogs. While those methods are popular, continued research is showing how counterproductive they are. Our methods are safe, effective and don't produce fallout like fear and aggression. We offer services in central and northwest Vermont. For more information, please visit our website at www.ftldogtraining.com ."

I've been training dogs professionally since 2002. I offer private lessons to dogs and their humans; my focus is on raising puppies, teaching pleasant pet manners, repairing behavior problems, and helping adopted dogs succeed in their new homes. I volunteer for the Safety Net Program of the New York City open-admission animal shelter system (http://www.nycacc.org/safetynet.htm), answer readers' questions at http://www.doggedhealth.com, and podcast as The Dog Trainer for Quick and Dirty Tips (http://dogtrainer.quickanddirtytips.com). All my work is grounded in the scientific study of animal learning in general and of dogs' cognition and canine behavior.
